How to Test Your Webcam Frames Per Second Performance
Sorry - the test widget is temporarily unavailable.
Have you ever wondered how many frames per second your webcam is sending? Choppy video, with out-of-sync audio, is typically due to low fps. Anything less than 8-10 fps is going to be noticeable. Now there is a free service that allows anyone to test their webcam fps. You don't have to download anything and you don't even have to register for an account. The service is from mailVU.com, and here's how to use it to measure your webcam performance.
Click Allow in the recorder widget below. (If you can't click Allow, try changing your browser) You can now see yourself under the Live Camera window. If you don't see yourself click on the drop down list of cameras and select the one that works for you. On the Mac it is typically called USB Webcam.
Click the green Record button above your image to start the recording session. After you click it the button will change to Stop and a notification will appear that recording is in process. When done click the red Stop button. To view your message simply click the red Play button above your image. Your recording will now play in the same window.
Look under the image and you will see your webcam fps performance! You can try this test as often as you like, from multiple locations, and with multiple webcams. Try it with different lighting and different Internet connections (wired/wireless) to determine the best for your situation.
We now provide a widget for anyone to put this test on your own web page.
